Expected Weight Loss Following Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Weight loss results, as with the lap band and gastric bypass, vary from patient to patient and other factors may influence the results. Recent studies have shown favourable results at 1, 2 and 3 years following Gastric Sleeve surgery compared to Gastric Banding with expected excess weight loss at the end of the first year at 60% compared to 38%.
The weight loss achieved with the gastric sleeve is a combination of the smaller stomach size as well as the removal of the Ghrelin hormone which is thought to stimulate hunger.
Expected weight loss is 0.5kg to 1kg per week for the first 12 months with great results usually achieved in the first year, with ongoing weight loss slowing but still reducing over years 2 and 3.
Factors influencing weight loss include
- Weight at the Time of Surgery
- Age of the Patient
- Motivation Levels
- Support Network
- Personal Health
- Compliance with Dietary, Medical, and Psychological Advice
