RESOURCES FOR PATIENTS

Is Surgery the Right Option for Me?

Weight loss surgery is recommended to assist individuals suffering from the physical and psychological effects of morbid obesity. It is therefore suitable for those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or above, or >30 with significant obesity-related medical problems. Such problems include diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, or degenerative joint disease. A qualified health professional at WeightLoss Solutions Australia can determine your suitability for weight loss surgery and advise you on the most suitable option. To determine your BMI, please use our BMI CALCULATOR.

Most patients visiting our clinic have an extensive diet history. They have become increasingly frustrated with the many fad diets that promise more that they can deliver, and fed up with the repetitive cycle of going on and off diets, which often leads to an obsession with food and dieting. The result is a love-hate relationship with food, propped up by feelings of deprivation, cravings, guilt, and failure. Having a healthy, rational relationship with food is essential and is the reason weight loss surgery has become such an attractive option for many overweight people around the world.

Type II Diabetes

Obesity is the number one cause of diabetes; and, there is sufficient medical literature these days to show diet and medication does not cure diabetes. Weight loss surgery is now widely recognized in the medical industry as the only cure for diabetes. Dr Layani is able to explain the health risks associated with diabetes, along with the benefits of weight loss surgery; and, our dietitian is experienced in formulating appropriate meal plans for diabetic patients undergoing weight loss surgery.

Post-operative results with diabetes are astonishing. Up to 80% of patients are cured of their diabetes and over 90% of patients show an improvement in their diabetes following surgery. The need for diabetes medication is either completely or significantly reduced within 3 months after surgery. If you are older than 45, overweight, and have a family history of diabetes, YOU ARE AT RISK for the disease.

Open Nights

WeightLoss Solutions Australia runs a number of information sessions for patients and GPs to attend throughout the year. These sessions give attendees an opportunity to meet Dr Layani and the weight management team, to learn more about the available weight loss options, and ask any questions they may have regarding any of the procedures. For more information or to RSVP for our next Weight Loss Surgery Open Night follow the link or contact us on 1300 934 448.

Post-Op Workshops

All patients undergoing weight loss surgery are urged to attend our post-op workshop around 6 weeks after surgery and again at 6 and 12 months after surgery. The lunch-time workshop is run by our psychologist, Warren Artz, who will assist you with motivational strategies for being more physically active, and our dietitian, Taryn Swift, who will help you as you move through the various phases of your post-op diet. These workshops also give you an opportunity to meet other patients who are at the same phase of their weight loss journey and allow patients to forge new friendships with people who have similar goals and expectations.
