Laparoscopic Reflux Surgery and Hiatus Hernia Repair

A hiatus hernia is the protrusion of the upper part of the stomach into the thorax through a tear or weakness in the diaphragm. Many patients do not experience symptoms with hiatus hernias; however, some may experience heartburn and regurgitation when stomach acid refluxes back into the Oesophagus, which can be painful and could lead to Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) or more serious complications if not treated. Laparoscopic repair of large hiatus hernias has drastically improved morbidity and mortality rates and the use of composite Goretex Marlex mesh reinforces the repair to reduce recurrence rates. Dr Layani offers laparoscopic surgery as a preferred form of treatment for GORD and hiatus hernias.

Laparoscopic Hernia Repair

Inguinal and Ventral

A hernia is the protrusion of an organ or the muscular wall of an organ through the cavity that holds it and can be classified according to its anatomical location. Symptoms include a bulge in the area of the hernia without any associated pain, which may be more prominent when coughing, straining or standing up. Laparoscopic repair of hernias result in reduced pain, shorter hospital stays, early return to normal everyday activities, lower rate of recurrence, and minimal scarring. Dr Layani performs laparoscopic hernia repair in 95% of cases.

Gallbladder

The gallbladder is a small organ that stores and concentrates bile from the liver, which is essential in the digestion of fatty foods. Surgical removal of the gall bladder is referred to as a Cholecystectomy, a procedure that can be performed laparoscopically, allowing the patient to return to normal everyday activities relatively soon after surgery. Gallbladders are removed to relieve symptoms associated with gallstones, which are small crystals, and eventually stones, formulated from too much cholesterol and not enough bile acids. Symptoms of gallstones include recurring pain under the right ribs, nausea and vomiting, indigestion, burping and flatulence, abdominal discomfort, intolerance to fatty foods, fever, sweating and chills, and jaundice. The body can function normally without the gallbladder; the liver takes over the responsibility of storing the bile for later use. Because gall stones have the potential to re-form once removed, a laparoscopic cholecystectomy is usually the best option to avoid recurrence. Gall stones are more common in women, particularly those using birth control pills, or suffering from diabetes or obesity.
