Gastric Sleeve surgery is a weight loss procedure whereby approximately three quarters of the stomach is removed, significantly reducing the capacity so patients feel satisfied after eating a much smaller meal. Average excess weight loss with Gastric Sleeve is approximately 60-80%.

This surgery is a good alternative to the Gastric Bypass, as it requires no re-routing of the intestinal tract with minimal nutritional deficiency concerns. It also offers a more permanent solution to the Gastric Band, with no foreign body implanted and minimal ongoing follow up required.

It's suitable to morbidly obese patients with a BMI > 40 or for those patients with associated co-morbidities with a BMI > 35. Patients find they can tolerate a wide variety of foods, only in smaller portions, and are advised to make lifestyle changes including dietary and exercise.

The surgery is performed laparoscopically and takes approximately 1 hour under general anaesthetic, followed by a two night stay in hospital before returning home and resuming normal activities within a few days to a week.
