“He said the battle against obesity should focus on stopping children from becoming obese in the first place and making bariatric surgery more widely available as it was nearly impossible for obese people to lose weight any other way. Bariatric surgery involves reducing the capacity of the stomach and has been shown to have long-term benefits for the morbidly obese.”
This is a great story, not all overweight people are lazy or overeaters. Some people are more genetic changes caused by environmental factors, either in the womb or in their early years.
Studies of gastric bypass patients have found that after 10 years, they have maintained 75 per cent of their weight loss. Long-term studies of people who lose weight by dieting alone have shown they regain between two-thirds and all of the weight within five years.

One of our thoughtful patients sent this very important warning.
As I was washing my hair in the shower today, I took the time to read the bottle. I was in shock !
I use this shampoo daily and it runs down my entire body, on the bottle it reads “For extra volume and body”
Seriously why have I not noticed this before? This explains a lot.
Tomorrow I am going to start using Morning Fresh Dishwashing Liquid. It says right on the label “dissolves fat that is otherwise difficult to remove”
It pays to read the labels my friends !
-Thank you Caroline, we all got a good laugh from this.

Winter is an easy time to eat the right foods. There is nothing more comforting than a nice hot bowl of soup. Here is one of our favourite recipes taken from the Knife, Fork and Band Cook book by Sally Johnston, this book is available from our practice and at “The Weightloss Shop” online store.
This is a fantastic tool for people that have had ANY type of weightloss surgery. From bands to sleeves and has some yummy foods for all phases from fluid, to puree to soft foods.
Sweet Potato Soup
(serves 4)
Oil Spray
3 cups diced sweet potato
2 cups salt reduced chicken or vegatable stock
1/2 diced onion
1 clove crushed garlic
2 tablespoons diced celery
1/2 cup grated zucchini
1/4 cup washed red lentils
1/3 cup low fat milk
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Heat a large saucepan that has been sprayed with oil. Add onion, garlic and celery and gently cook until soft. Add sweet potato, zucchini, lentils and stock and simmer until the lentils are soft.
Add capsicum and remove from heat. Leave to cool slightly before pouring into a blender or food processor. Puree until soup is thin enough to drink through a straw. (if on liquid phase) or until all contents are smooth. Whilst pureeing, slowly pour in the milk and lemon juice. Return to saucepan and reheat gently before serving, but do not boil.
Enjoy

I would like to share with you a very personal entry in my diary that I wrote after my lap band surgery.
I felt like I was in an abusive relationship. I was embarassed and I was emotionally attached.
I took a big step and needed to free myself, I had taken the first step (having my lap band) and this was the next.
So here is my dear John letter to my lover (FOOD)
Dear food
Well I have to say I have loved you way too much, for way too long. I didn’t think I could do it, but I have found someone else, his name is lap band.
He has made me see things in a different light.
He does not push me to the point of no return with eating, he does not make me hide when eating and does not make me embarrassed to eat in public. He makes me proud to say he is my partner and he looks after me. He has taught me how to take back control of my life.
Unlike you who always wanted me to have more and more, you were not looking after my health or best interests. You only cared about yourself and how much of you I could take. I am sick of sneaking around with you and it being just you and me. I want more, I want more time with my family and friends and I feel you have robbed me of that.
I have to say food I became embarrassed to be seen with you. But I don’t put all the blame on you, a lot of my problem was with my love for you. So, I am done, I have had it with you, we will still see each other around, and I will still pop in to say HI but this constant being together is not good.
Will I miss you? Probably, but I will get over it and lap band will make sure of that.
Take care food that is what I am doing from now on.
